Sep 9, Migraine headache relief through fitness - a Personal Trainers story.

Migraine headache relief was a fringe benefit of adopting a new lifestyle.

Thirteen years ago I discovered the profound difference fitness and nutrition could make in my life and I became interested in sharing my knowledge of the many benefits I discovered with others.

The day I suffered from my first migraine headache I had no idea what was happening to me, I thought I must have been dying because I had no experience or knowledge of migraines. I didn't realize the impact migraines would have on my life when I first discussed the diagnosis with my doctor.

For many years it seemed I had a migraine headache more often than not. Often times I was incapacitated as a result of the pain, making it difficult to hold down a job, make social commitments, or be a normal functional individual.

Of course I tried all of the current medications available to control the migraines, but time and again the side affects were worse than any benefits the medication offered.

I sent for information from the migraine foundation and discussed migraine headaches with medical professionals. Curiously, neither my physician nor my neurologist discussed exercise with me. Nor did either talk about nutrition, aside from alerting me to common food triggers. And the information I received from the migraine foundation was just more of what I already knew.

It happened that a close friend was offered complimentary passes to a new Y.M.C.A facility in our area, and asked if I would accompany her. This was the birthing place of my interest in womens health and fitness.

I was so impressed with the programs and equipment that I decided to become a member. The Y.M.C.A. offers many daytime programs for pre-schoolers and affordable babysitting for infants so before long I was packing up the children and heading to the Y.M.C.A where I enjoyed my own exercise program on a daily basis.

Along with a new interest in fitness came a new awareness of nutrition and general women's health.

For me the connection was obvious and I sought information on nutrition to complement my fitness program.

The benefits of my new lifestyle were immediately apparent to me.

The most amazing benefit was the disappearance of regular migraine headaches. I still get an occasional migraine headache but they are very infrequent and rarely last more than a day or two. This is by far more tolerable than enduring several migraine headaches a month that generally lasted four to seven days!

"...I have suffered from migraines since I was 8 (I'm 54). I was taking huge doses of medication and lived in fear of that next migraine headache. I joined Curves for Women in November to get in shape. My headaches have almost disappeared! Whether it's the exercise, prayers (I've said many) or even the Vitamin B complex I've begun, I am soooo grateful.

For many years, people (and my doctors)suggested exercise, but I didn't believe them. And preferred the sofa toanything else. I'm sorry now I wasted all those years and hope I canconvince somebody else to at least give exercise a try. The first weeks werebad, as muscle soreness increased my headaches. But that didn't last."

Thanks!
Linda DiStefano

Some of the other benefits I enjoyed were a seemingly unending supply of energy and stamina, better quality sleep, an enjoyment of new and interesting foods and new friends with common interests.

Another bonus was the firm, fit and defined body that now belonged to me and gave me confidence in all aspects of my life.

This led to my decision to become a fitness instructor and later to study nutrition and become a certified personal fitness trainer with the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) which has certified some of the country's top trainers. I am now able to be a positive influence in other peoples lives, helping them to enjoy the benefits of a healthy and fit lifestyle.

Now, not only am I following my passion but migraine headache relief is a fortunate bonus!

James Cottrill of http://www.relieve-migraine-headache.com/ contributed the following tips for anyone who might suffer a headache brought on by exercise.

"...If you're one of the millions of people who get regular headaches, exercise can be better than any drug, as Cindy's experience shows. It can cut down the frequency of headaches, diminish the pain of the headaches you get, and enable you to cope better in general. But what if exercise makes your headache worse, or what if exercise actually gives you a headache, or triggers a migraine?

First, if this happens for the first time or worse than ever before, see your doctor right away. It could be something serious. If your doctor has confirmed this is nothing to worry about, but the pain still gets worse during exercise, stop for a while to rest.

How can you stop the pain of exercise induced headache? First, read the tips here on Cindy's website, and take general precautions such as a proper warm up and cool down, and drinking lots of fluids. If dropping blood sugar levels are a problem for you, try a glucose tablet before starting, and try eating a full meal soon after you finish, or at least a snack. Some people find that taking a couple of ibuprofen (Advil) before starting keeps the pain away. Finally, you may need to try some lower impact activities, at least for a while. Follow these tips and you should find that over time the headaches become less frequent.

If you stop exercising because it seems to give you headaches, you're starting a vicious cycle which may leave you with more headaches in the long run. Find ways to make it work, and fight back against headache pain!"

Sep 9, The health benefits of vitamin C.

An adequate intake of vitamin C may protect against stroke and heart attack and a host of other ailments.

Until about 200 years ago, sailors deprived of fruits and vegetables on long voyages commonly died of scurvy.

Subsequent British navy experiments, however, proved that the disease could be prevented if a supply of lemon or lime juice was stowed on board.

The active ingredient? Vitamin C.

This important nutrient not only prevents scurvy, it's an essential nutrient with a variety of functions in the body.

According to Mark Kantor, Ph.D., food and nutrition specialist, department of nutrition and food science, University of Maryland, College Park, vitamin C aids in wound healing; prevents periodontal disease; enhances absorption of dietary non-heme iron; acts as an in vivo nitrite scavenger to help prevent formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines; maintains collagen and connective tissue in the body; and acts as the most versatile and effective water-soluble dietary antioxidant.

Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, is responsible for 950,000 deaths in the United States every year.

It's estimated that people who have high blood levels of vitamin C live six years longer than those who have lower blood levels. Sources: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Journal of Epidemiology, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

For the vitamin-conscious among us, reaching for this vitamin often seems associated with cold-and-flu season. Its potent antioxidant properties can help protect our immune systems against the ravages of winter illnesses and help us fight off infection. But now there is even more reason to ensure you're getting the C you need: Recent findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggest that a diet high in vitamin C may help protect your heart from damage.

Unlike most other mammals, humans don't naturally produce their own vitamin C; the only way to it is to ingest it.

You could pile your plate high with citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines and grapefruit), as well as papayas, strawberries, cantaloupe, and pineapple. And you could eat your fill of vegetables such as tomatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, cabbage and turnips. But you'd need to eat several servings to get the appropriate amount of vitamin C. And it can be lost from foods during preparation, cooking or storage.

Moreover, many of us already have a vitamin C deficiency, which occurs most often: If you smoke If you suffer physical or emotional stress If you drink alcohol If you have allergies If you have a fever or viral illness If you're taking antibiotics, cortisone, aspirin or other pain medicines If you're exposed to toxic chemicals (e.g., DDT, petroleum products, carbon monoxide), environmental pollution or heavy metals (e.g., lead, mercury, cadmium) If you suffer from recurrent infections If you're a woman who takes the birth-control pill If you're older than age 60

To ensure you're getting the right amount of C, take a nutritional supplement. It's a wise move for your overall health but particularly for your heart -- noteworthy in recent studies, both at the National Institutes of Health and the Harvard School of Public Health, is the fact that it's supplementation, not consuming foods rich in vitamin C, that appears to protect against heart disease.

The late Dr. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel laureate and a strong proponent of vitamin C, was convinced that supplementation of can help prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin C's link to heart disease, he said, was supported by studies of patients with scurvy, the disease caused by a deficiency. Half the patients in the study who died after contracting scurvy did so because of ruptured blood vessels.

More recently, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that an adequate intake of vitamin C might protect against stroke and heart attack by lowering blood pressure and LDL ("bad cholesterol") levels, and helping to thin the blood to protect against clots. It also helps prevent atherosclerosis (commonly known as hardening of the arteries) by strengthening the artery walls as it manufactures collagen, the protein that gives shape to connective tissues and strength to skin and blood vessels.

How much is enough?

The current US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 60 mg, although a lesser amount may be adequate if taken in a multi-supplement that also includes citric acid and/or citrus bioflavonoids (naturally occurring compounds in vitamin C), which aid in absorption. Sep 9, The Benefits of Whey Protein for Body and Mind.

Not long ago it was commonly thought that whey protein and whey products were used primarily by bodybuilders and other "health nuts."

What isn't commonly known is whey's historical use as a medicinal food going as far back as the time of Hippocrates. Researchers have now begun to study the benefits of whey protein as a food that promotes more that just muscle growth... Two recent studies show whey protien may have beneficial effects on both the body and mind.

Stress

The researchers concluded after one study involving subjects under acute stress, that the "Consumption of a dietary protein enriched in tryptophan increased the plasma Trp-LNAA (large neutral amino acids) ratio and, in stress-vulnerable subjects, improved coping ability, probably through alterations in brain serotonin."

(Note: Alpha-lactalbumin is a major sub fraction found in whey, which has an especially high tryptophan content.)

Cognitive performance declines under chronic stress and it is theorized that the effect of chronic stress on performance may be partially due to reduced brain serotonin levels. As this study found, whey increased serotonin levels by dramatically increasing tryptophan levels. Tryptophan is an amino acid that is the direct precursor to serotonin

Improved Memory

The same group of researchers sought to find out if whey protein could improve cognitive performance under stress.

Similar to the other study, they found a significantly greater increase in the plasma trp-LNAA ratio after consumption of whey rather than after casein (the control). Most interesting was a significant improvement in memory test performance observed only in the stress-vulnerable subjects. Worthy of note is the fact that participants who were not vulnerable to stress did not show an improvement in memory. These findings show that those prone to stress may benefit greatly from the use of whey protein and other nutrients known to raise serotonin levels.

Fat Loss

Another study looked directly at the effects of different pre-workout drinks on muscle mass and body fat. The study came to some very interesting conclusions. The composition of the pre-exercise meal does affect substrate utilization during exercise and thus might affect long-term changes in body weight and composition. That is, what you eat before you work out can dictate what you use for energy (i.e. carbs, fats, and/or proteins), which alters what you burn (oxidize) for energy.

The researchers took groups of rats and made them exercise two hours daily for over five weeks (talk about over training!), either in the fasted state or one hour after they ingested a meal enriched with a simple sugar (glucose), whole milk protein or whey protein.

By the end of a five week study period, not surprisingly, body weight was greater in the glucose, whole milk protein and whey fed rats than in the fasted ones.

No shock there!

Here is where it gets interesting: In the group getting the glucose or the whole milk protein, the increase in weight was from body fat, but in the whey fed group...

the increase in weight was from an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in body fat!

Only the rats getting the whey before their workout increased muscle mass and decreased body fat. The researchers theorized this was due to whey's ability to rapidly deliver amino acids during exercise.

Is this the next big find in sports nutrition and populations (i.e. elderly, people with wasting diseases such as HIV, cancer, etc.) looking to preserve muscle mass and lose body fat? Hard to say at this time since the study was done in rats. But if it turns out to be true in humans-and there is no reason people can't try it now-it would indeed be a breakthrough in the quest to add muscle and lose fat.

Also, according to expert Will Brink...

Numerous studies on whey proteins demonstrate their potential for improving immunity, boosting glutathione and protecting against cancer. Sales of whey proteins are increasing worldwide and there has been a severe shortage of whey as producers attempt to meet the high consumer demand.

Researchers are finding possible medical uses for whey that are quite unexpected and different from whey's traditional role as an immune booster and anticancer functional food.

As with all cutting edge science, the new research is preliminary but exciting nonetheless. For example, whey may be able to reduce stress and depression by lowering cortisol and increasing brain serotonin, improve liver function (in those suffering from certain forms of hepatitis) and reduce blood pressure.

Women Need to Know More About Treating Heart Disease

Article Body:

Although 73 percent of women know how to prevent heart disease, many are unaware of how to treat it once a diagnosis has been made.

In a survey of 1,979 women over age 35, only 55 percent said they understand how to treat heart disease. Respondents often incorrectly named prevention techniques such as exercise and healthy eating as treatment options, and less than 10 percent named actual treatments such as angioplasty and stent placement.

Hispanics and African-Americans, both considered high-risk groups for heart disease, were twice as likely as Caucasian women to say they did not know any treatments at all.

The survey was conducted by the "Healthy From the Heart" campaign sponsored by the National Women's Health Resource Center and Cordis Corp. The campaign encourages women to learn about treatment options for coronary artery disease, the most common type of heart disease, so they can make better decisions if diagnosed.

"The good news is that women are aware that they are at risk for heart disease. The bad news is that they are overly confident in their ability to prevent it and treat it," said Dr. Cindy Grines, an interventional cardiologist with William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oaks, Mich. "Women must realize that education is the key to conquering the threat of coronary artery disease. There are a variety of treatment options now available."

The most common procedure for treating coronary artery disease is balloon angioplasty with a coronary stent. Angioplasty widens narrowed arteries by threading a balloon-tipped catheter through the arm or groin artery to the blocked artery in the heart. The balloon is inflated to compress the plaque against the artery walls, which in turn expands the blood vessel so blood can flow more easily.

Scientific advances have led to the development of the drug-eluting stent, a tiny mesh scaffold that props the artery open while releasing small amounts of a particular drug, such as sirolimus, inside the artery over a period of time. This helps keep plaque from reforming and helps prevent repeat blockage from occurring inside the blood vessel.

Coronary bypass surgery is another treatment option. While more invasive, it is a safe and effective treatment for patients who may not qualify for angioplasty and stent insertion.

Fat loss is a goal for many people because the sedentary life style and the processed foods are really having a negative impact on our weight. In theory, fat loss is not very complicated and it can be easily achieved with the right combination of diet and exercise. The market is full with weight loss programs, but there are still lots of people who don’t seem to lose any fat, no matter what they do. Restrictive and fad diets are not a good option although they are tempting.

Their results are only temporary and they also pose various dangers in what concerns your health. A natural and gradual fat loss is always healthier and it also ensures the fact that you will be able to maintain yourself in shape over the years. Natural fat loss tips for diet and exercise are of help for many people who don’t know exactly where to start from in their attempt to lose weight.

The most important tip that you have to keep in mind is that diet and exercise go hand in hand. No natural fat loss is possible only dieting or only exercising. Natural and healthy fat loss is only going to be achieved by changing unhealthy habits and by imposing yourself a new life style. Keeping your calorie intake under control is the first step towards a great body. It is widely known that junk food is to be avoided and even completely eliminated.

Keep your meals simple and go for fresh fruits and vegetables as often as you can. Use a calorie counter for knowing exactly how much you are supposed to eat during a day and what you are allowed to consume. Unhealthy fat and sugars are not good for your body fat percentage and for the way you look.

The second component in any weight loss program, with an importance that equals the one of dieting is exercising. It is a way to burn calories and as long as you burn more than you consume, you will start losing fat. This is probably the most important natural fat loss tip for diet and exercising that you have to be aware of. When it comes to exercises, almost anything will do as long as you keep your muscles moving. It is best to choose an activity that you like, so that you don’t consider your exercise routine an ordeal.

Another very important tip for fat loss is to choose a natural supplement to help you in your battle with the extra kilos. Make sure it is fully natural and also ask for the opinion of a specialist if you are not sure which the correct approach for losing weight in your case is.

There are so many health and fitness plans that are designed to increase weight management that you could literally do a new one every week and never run out of potential plans. Of course, you want something that is going to help you reach new levels of health and fitness, not just take off a few pounds. And there is a huge difference.

Health and fitness isn’t so much about the number reflected back at you on the scale. It is really about giving your body a chance to get into great shape, lose some weight, develop stronger heart and lungs, and develop muscle tone. It’s about increasing the quality of life as well as one’s longevity through health foods and exercise programs that are there to keep the ticker ticking.

Weight loss and good weight management are often a part of develop a health and fitness plan. Obviously, you don’t want to change your diet and start the daily sweat regimen only to find that your clothes are still too tight at the end of the week. Choosing a good program isn’t so tough as long as you look for something that covers all of your basic principles.

Any fitness and health program that requires you to cut out any single food group isn’t really healthy. Sure, you want to avoid eating lots of sticky buns and white unbleached flour carbs, but you don’t want to hack protein or good carbs right out of your diet. Instead, you want to focus on balanced eating and exercising that gives you the ability to adequately burn fat while creating a stronger body all over.

If your fitness program involves lifting weights in any capacity, you should expect your protein intake to increase at least by several grams per day. If your fitness program is geared more toward developing stamina you should expect your good carb count to increase by several grams per day. You have to put energy in if you want to get energy out.

Many of today’s health and fitness programs significantly discourage the ingestion of sugar, even in the form of fruit. Moderation is really the key. You want to care for your entire body, not just the way your body looks. Learning to eat the healthy foods you love in moderation, exercise to build up your body from the inside out, and care for yourself the way you would care for a loving partner rounds out the health and fitness plan’s goals.
